Tight Chest & Rib Pain

You can’t get a satisfying breath. The chest feels tight. The neck does all the work. That’s a mechanics problem.

A lot of “tight chest”, rib pain and neck tension is the ribcage not expanding and the breath stuck up high. The jaw, neck and lower back then brace to make up for it.

This is a core part of how we assess — not a side note. We restore how the ribs move and how you breathe at rest, then the pain and the “air hunger” have less to hang onto.

Who this is for

  • Can’t take a full breath, or the breath feels stuck at the top of the chest

  • Tight chest, tight upper back, or ribs that won’t move

  • Rib pain with twisting, reaching or a deep breath

  • Neck and shoulder tension that keeps coming back

  • Mouth breathing, sighing, or feeling wound up at rest

  • Back, hip or jaw pain that flares when the trunk is locked

  • Springfield Central, Springfield Lakes, Augustine Heights, Brookwater, Ripley, Ipswich corridor — clinic or mobile

This is not an emergency chest-pain clinic. Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath at rest, fainting, swelling in one calf, or known heart/lung red flags → medical care first. Asthma, infection and cardiac issues get ruled out properly. We treat the movement pattern once that’s clear.

What usually drives it (and gets missed)

Common drivers:

  • Upper-chest breathing as the default

  • Ribcage that sits parked up or won’t expand sideways

  • Desk and training postures that lock the thorax

  • Neck muscles doing the job of the diaphragm

  • A trunk that never settles, so hips and jaw stay braced

If previous physio never looked at how you breathe when you’re just sitting there, they missed a big lever.

Our approach (what’s different)

Ribcage position. Expansion. Breath at rest — not a 10-minute “belly breathing” lecture.

We check how the ribs move, where the air actually goes, and what that does to neck, spine and pelvis. Then we give you positions and drills that change it in the room and at your desk.

Hands-on on the thorax if it improves the next breath and the next movement. The product is a ribcage that moves and a breath you don’t have to think about all day.

What to expect

Common questions

Is this anxiety?

Anxiety can drive the breath high. A stiff ribcage can also feel like anxiety. We treat the mechanics. Mental health care sits alongside that if you need it.

Will I just be told to belly-breathe?

No. If the ribs don’t move, cueing a belly breath doesn’t last.

Can this help my back / hip / jaw?

Often, when those are being driven by a locked trunk. That’s why it sits with the other specialty pages.

Do I need lung tests first?

If you’ve got unexplained breathlessness, chest pain or a known lung condition, get medical clearance. Mechanical tightness after that’s clear is what we treat.
